January 3, Puerto Maldonado to Cuzco

Woke up and felt great. Packed up and enjoyed a little morning in the jungle with sounds of monkeys and/or birds (I was never sure), beautiful sky, cool air.

Breakfast was awesome: fruit salad, bread, eggs/omlet, light empanada thing with cheese inside, fresh fruit juice, yogurt smoothie, and of course coffee.

We gathered up our stuff,

Chris brushed that cucaracha into the other cabin, and we headed to the truck, back to the boat, back to the other truck,

to the office.

The woman in the office, Tatiana, who spoke great English, helped us find a hostel in Cuzco, our next destination. She got us "special price" on it. She also gave us a little tour of the flea market

and the ice cream shop where we had some delicious fruit sorbet.

Then back to the airport for an uneventful flight to Cuzco.

We arrived and met the cab to our hotel. The guy with the driver (sent by the hostel) gave us the hard sell on some tours his company offered in the city. At the hotel, they gave us a choice of two rooms, and the one we picked had 4 beds! I did confirm that nobody else was going to be sleeping in there with us.

The hotel employee brought us tea made with coca leaves, which is a traditional drink in the Andes.

They do make cocaine with them but its something like 1000 times more potent than what you find in the tea. It is supposed to help with the altitude - 11,600 feet in Cuzco. It had a very pleasant, mild flavor. We walked around the town a bit, the first place was supposed to be a very good traditional cevicheria from our guide book but we couldn't find it! We went to our second choice, Victor Victoria, which was very good.

We had alpaca steaks! They were so delicious.

The waitress was super friendly and spoke English with us - I think she wanted to practice.

We wandered around the town for awhile and saw some of the steep streets,

some people with llamas,

and ended up seeing an irish pub.

We were very exhausted and mostly just thinking about heading back to the hotel soon for sleep.

We had pizza for dinner at another place recommended by LP, Chez Maggy, it was pretty good.

Also had Pisco Sours, I think they were the best ones here of all the ones we tried. (which was really only about 3 or 4 - but these were good.) I don't think it had anything to do with the size of these.

We went back to the hotel and watched Legally Blonde on Fox Life, a channel which I didn't know existed but was playing lots of movies in English.
